Three Cord Unity
Ecclesiastes 4:12:
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
God’s design for marriage was never meant to be a fragile bond between two imperfect people trying to hold everything together alone. His design is stronger, deeper, and far more secure: Christ, husband, and wife woven together as one. When a marriage is built upon Jesus Christ, unity becomes more than a goal — it becomes a living reality.
Matthew 19:6
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
Christ at the Center
Marriage flourishes when Christ is not merely included, but enthroned. He is not an addition to the relationship; He is the foundation.
1 Corinthians 3:11
"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ."
When both husband and wife surrender their hearts to Him, they find strength beyond their own ability. Two people striving in their own strength will eventually grow weary, but two people leaning on Christ discover grace for every weakness.
2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
They also receive wisdom for every decision.
James 1:5
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
Love endures because it is rooted in Him.
1 Corinthians 13:7
Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
A home centered on Christ is not perfect — but it is protected.
Psalm 127:1
Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
Unity Is a Spiritual Safeguard
The enemy seeks division because division weakens what God intends to be strong.
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
When husband and wife walk in unity, they close the door to discord, resentment, and spiritual attack. Unity is cultivated through:
Prayer together:
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Humility toward one another:
Philippians 2:3
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
Forgiveness that is quick and sincere:
Ephesians 4:32
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Shared devotion to God’s will:
Colossians 3:17
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
A commitment to protect the bond of peace:
(Romans 12:18)
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
When both hearts are surrendered to Christ, pride finds no foothold. His presence softens hearts, aligns priorities, and strengthens love.
John 15:12-13
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Built Upon an Unshakable Foundation
Anything built upon human emotion alone can shift with circumstances. But a marriage built upon Christ stands firm when storms come.
Matthew 7:24-25
24) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
Love deepens when: Christ is the source of patience:
Galatians 5:22
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,”
Christ is the measure of sacrifice:
Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Christ is the model of leadership:
1 Peter 5:2-3
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
Christ is the keeper of hearts:
Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
When husband and wife cling to Him, they also cling more closely to one another.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
A Cord Woven by God
A threefold cord is strong because it is intertwined. Each strand supports the others. Remove one strand, and the strength is compromised. But when Christ is woven into the relationship, the bond becomes resilient, enduring, and secure.
We need one another — but even more, we need Christ at the center. He sustains love
1 Corinthians 13:4-8
4) Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5) Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6) Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7) Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8) Charity never faileth..."
He restores peace (Romans 12:18) and preserves unity (Ephesians 4:3). When a marriage is surrendered to Him, what God has joined together cannot easily be broken
Mark 10:9
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
